JACK Baldwin is hopeful Ross County can discover a bit more self-belief heading into tonight’s vital home match.

While visiting Motherwell sit just one Premiership place above County, five points separate the sides – lending the clash an air of added significance given the potential six-point swing.

The Staggies are desperate not to be cut adrift in the bottom three and know a return to winning ways would lift them to within two points of the Fir Park club.

Performances, more than results this season, have been decent through a tough set of opening fixtures, but there was a sense on Saturday that the Dingwall team, uncharacteristically, failed to muster much of a response to Hibernian’s opener.

One of the few bright spots was on-loan Bristol City winger Owura Edwards’ contribution, particularly in the first half. Club vice-captain Baldwin would like more of the County squad to show similar courage and confidence on the ball.

“We all just need a bit more belief in ourselves,” Baldwin admitted. “Forward players especially, and footballers generally, thrive off confidence.

“It is tough for our attacking players to get going when they have maybe not quite found their feet in certain games.

“Owura was incredible on Saturday and his pace is a huge threat. We can take positives from that, and hopefully the rest of the lads can draw energy and inspiration from him.

“It has to come from within ourselves.”

Baldwin is delighted to be back in action so soon after the 2-0 defeat.

“After a defeat like that one at the weekend, you don’t want to wait a week to get back out there,” he said.

“Motherwell will obviously be coming up here with a similar mindset and we have to be on our guard.

“They have plenty of threats, but it is good the game has come around fast and on Tuesday night we get the opportunity to put things right.”
