Ross County teenager wins Scottish Schools steeplechase gold medal

ROSS County Athletics club athlete Andrew Baird came out on top when he claimed gold in the steeplechase at the Scottish Schools Athletics Association Championship at Grangemouth.

The teenager proved too good for the chasing pack as he won gold in the Group B under-17 race with a time of 4:24.88. He also claimed silver in the 1500 metres race in 4:12.63.

George Ross also impressed as he finished in second place in the hammer with 28 metres.

Cailtyn Heggie won silver in the under-17 3000 metres championship with a time of 10:10.52.

Emily Bell won bronze in the 1500 metres steeplechase with 6:54.75.

Elsewhere, Edderton athlete Reuben Urquhart was in top form as recorded a new personal best to win the under-13 800 metres title at the RAM League in Inverness on Saturday.

The East Sutherland Athletics Club runner came out on top at the Queen’s Park Stadium as he romped to victory in a time of two minutes and 33 seconds.

In the equivalent race for girls, Lottie Muir was just outside her personal best, with a time of 2.54.

Eoghann Gollan was in a class of his own, as he cruised to victory in the senior men’s race, with a new personal best of 2.03

Harry Fleming set a new personal best in the 800 metres for Under-11 boys, with a time of 2:58 secs, followed closely by his training partner, Hamish Bannerman in 3:03.

Kara Mackay recorded a new personal best in the under-15 girls with of 3.05, as did Eilidh Fisher in the Under-17’s race, with an identical time.
