IT was a demoralising and crushing blow, but Jordan Tillson is convinced there is enough character within the current Ross County squad to bounce back from Tuesday night’s 5-0 thumping by Motherwell.

The midfielder feels the home defeat, with most of the damage done during an inept second half, must prove to be a watershed moment in the Staggies’ season.

Asked if County’s confidence was low after failing to turn some reasonable, and some quite good, performances into points so far this season, Tillson was emphatic.

“ I think we have a strong enough and good enough group here to sort this out,” he said.

“In my time at the club, this hasn’t really happened before and we want to make sure it is a one-off.

“It does happen in football sometimes, but we have to apologise to the fans. It wasn’t good enough in the second half but there is talent here, good lads and good characters, so we’ll go again.

“I think we can look back and learn from it, but we need to draw a line under this and get back on it for Saturday.”

A painful Tuesday night gave way to a galling video recap of the 5-0 thrashing on Wednesday morning as the County endured the post-mortem on that disastrous second half showing.

Motherwell led 1-0 at the break, but there was little in the game and nothing to hint at the rout about to unfold as Kevin Van Veen ran amok with a hat-trick, while Callum Slattery and Joe Efford also chipped in.

“It is a sore one to take. We had a real go in the first half and I thought it was quite even, although they took the lead from the penalty spot,” the Bath-born midfielder said.

“In the second half, we just didn’t come out of the traps. We’re going to have to use this to learn, starting with the trip to Livingston on Saturday. It has to be a reset button now for our season.”
