While there has been plenty of optimism in Dingwall after performances against Hearts and Celtic, the Staggies as yet have nothing to show for their efforts on the league table.

Fail to beat St Mirren this Saturday and it may become difficult not to think back to last season, when despite playing well at times County went 10 games without winning at the start of the campaign.

Callachan, then, wants to get that first win out of the way after seeing points slip from County’s grasp in the last two weeks.

“Obviously we’re only two games into the season, but we didn’t get the start we wanted to last year and we still ended up picking up form and results,” he explained.

“We’re confident we can do that again this year.

“We played two of the three best teams in the league, and we’ve given a good account of ourselves, so hopefully we can go and beat the lesser teams so to speak.

“There are positives there, but we need to pick up points. I want to win games, so I’m disappointed because we had a chance to get a result.

“There are positives, it’s not the end of the world. We’ve got 36 games to go. We played against the champions on Saturday, so there’s a lot to take forward that we can say we did well.”

With those positives to take from the matches against Hearts and Celtic, Callachan is confident that a similar level of performance will be enough to win in Paisley this weekend.

“We just need to play the way we have the last two weeks and I think we’ll be fine,” he added.

“They lost on Saturday but they had a man sent off, so they will be right up for it and so will we.”
