The Staggies have never beaten Rangers in their history, and with Steven Gerrard’s men dominant at the top of the Premiership table most will expect another tough afternoon in Glasgow for County.

With confidence-boosting victories against Hibernian and Aberdeen in recent weeks though, Hughes will be doing all he can to make sure history inspires his side.

“It’s a challenge and I relish challenges,” he insisted.

“We are under no illusions as to how difficult it’s going to be. Rangers are out of sight at this moment and they play the football I love to see.

“We know what we’re up against.

“All that has to inspire you – it has to. On that kind of stage you have the freedom to go and express yourself.

“We will have to be solid and have a good shape.

“But we also have to have a good go at them and that’s what we intend to do.

County memorably knocked Celtic out of the Betfred Cup in Glasgow at the end of November.

While Rangers have been in much better form than their city rivals, Hughes is still excited ahead of the contest.

“I think you’ve got nothing to lose against Celtic or Rangers,” Hughes reasoned.

“I always enjoy going to Parkhead and Ibrox because as a manager it really tests and stretches you in terms of your preparation and tactics.

“I try and simplify it, and it’s my job to help my team and give them the best opportunity possible to try and cause an upset.

“It’d be an upset, there’s no getting away from it, because they’ve got better players. All their substitutes would probably get a game here. That’s how far in front they are.

“It has to excite you, being massive underdogs with absolutely nothing to lose.

“Hopefully we can go and play with freedom and let Rangers know they have been in a game.”
