He spoke about adding to his squad after they got their Viaplay Cup group stage campaign off to a winning start with a 5-1 victory over Stranraer.

Mackay says that he is looking to strengthen his backline in time for Saturday’s second group clash against Greenock Morton.

He says at present, there are full backs playing in a central role and he says that he is keen for players to be in their designated roles.

Mackay said after the win at Stranraer: “There’s the possibility of another defender coming in during the week.

“We lost two experienced men at the back and we have not replaced them.

“We have replaced bits and pieces but if you actually look at it, Jack Baldwin is on his own at the back in terms of being an experienced centre back.

“We have young Dylan Smith, while Ben Purrington has been out for a long time.

“He’s a left back, although playing the left side of a three I think he’s terrific.

“I also think Connor Randall can play anywhere for me.

“I’ve got full backs playing for me there at the moment, and I certainly need one not to be that.”

Ross County kicked off their Viaplay Cup group stage campaign with a routine victory at Stranraer.

An own goal from Craig Ross and strike from Simon Murray gave the Staggies a comfortable first half advantage.

Murray then grabbed his second midway through the second half with Scott Robertson replying for Stranraer to give them some hope.

But Murray completed his hat trick before Jack Baldwin scored a late header to give the Staggies an impressive win.

Mackay says it was a great start to the competition and avoided an upset like fellow Premiership clubs St Mirren and St Johnstone did.

“It is good to come here and go away with the three points because there are few other teams that haven’t done that.

“Delighted for Simon Murray, once we got him into the way the club plays and the runs he makes alongside Jordan White, we have a goalscorer there.”
