The fourth year Dingwall Academy pupil will make her international debut in Pembry on Saturday, March 26 after a string of impressive performances in recent months.

Last Sunday, she won the Inverness 5k, following up her victory at the River Ness 5k back in October.

She also won bronze at the Scottish Cross Country Championships at Falkirk last month, which she described as the highlight of her career so far.

Heggie (15) says she is looking forward to the experience of taking on top school-aged athletes from across the UK and Ireland.

“It is going to be a good experience,” she said.

“Then that will be me done with cross country this season and then I will move on to road racing and track.

“Coming third at the national championships and the Scottish schools last month has been my best achievement this year.

“It has been a good month where everything has been happening at once.”

When she returns from Wales, Heggie says she is looking forward to competing on road and track and testing herself over longer distances.

“I would like to try the Baxter’s River Ness 10k,” said Heggie, which is due to take place in October.

“I am 15, so that means I am now able to run in that.

“Otherwise I am looking to get a few personal bests on the track and also compete in a few more 5k events.”

Heggie won the women’s race at the Inverness 5k with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds and says she was delighted to run under 18 minutes as well as win the event for the first time.

“It was like a minute faster than when I won the Baxter’s 5k back in October,” said Heggie.

“It was a nice way to end the cross country season.”
