EAST Sutherland athletes had the opportunity to compete on the road, track and at cross country last weekend, with events taking place at Balmoral, Kirkcaldy, Aberdeen and Portmahomack.

As North League Under 17 Champions, Constance Nankivell and Fraser Roach were invited to compete in the prestigious Balmoral road races. They decided to run in the adult category and this meant competing against experienced International runners of all ages. They clearly enjoyed the challenge as they produced excellent results with Constance taking sixth place in the 5k and Fraser twelfth in the 10k.

Audrey Scott and Calum MacIntyre also did well as over 1500 runners completed the demanding 10k course.

Anya Morrison is the current Under 11 North League Champion and was in a class of her own as she dominated the race for Primary School girls at Balmoral to finish well clear of more than 300 starters. At the age of seven, her younger sister Layla produced an exceptional performance to finish inside the top twenty in the same race.

The following day, Anya confirmed her potential by winning a top quality 1200 metre track race at Aberdeen with a superb time of four minutes exactly.

Catriona Scott elected to compete in the Secondary Schools’ race at Balmoral and, in a very closely contested encounter, came away with a fine eighth place finish.

Rosie Milligan produced a top class performance to finish ninth in the P6 race at the Scottish Primary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Kirkcaldy on Saturday. Chloe Barnsby finished strongly to take 31st in the P7 race.

On Sunday, Rosie finished first junior girl in the Portmahomack fun run and, with Annie Nankivell second, Nikki Bryan fourth and Olivia Bannerman sixth, the East Sutherland girls’ team were unbeatable.

Sam Bryan ran extremely well to take second place in the boys’ race and was well supported by Cameron Gordon and Brogar Oliver-Jones.

In the 10k race, Ross Bannerman led the way for the East Sutherland men’s team by finishing second, followed by Ruairdh Oliver-Jones, David Bryan and Nigel Jones.

Lauren McCulloch took gold in the equivalent race for women.
