THE talents of Ross-shire athletes have been recognised at an awards ceremony.

Invergordon Judo Club was hailed club of the year, while two Ross Sutherland rugby players also earned awards.

Alan McLean was voted top athlete in the over-18 category, while Rory Burnside was named top junior athlete under 18.

In the under-16 category, Alexander MacKay of Ross County Athletic Club headed the field, while Eveline Waring of Tain Tennis Club gained an award as a volunteer/admininstrator.

Alexander also won the overall young athlete award.

Others who stepped up to receive awards at the Ross and Cromarty Sports Council awards night were Black Isle-based Lucas Cairns of Inverness Harriers in the junior athlete 13-and-under section, along with Harriers coach Ross Cairns and club athlete Abbie McNally, who received an endeavour award.

The awards evening was held at Tulloch Castle in Dingwall.

Susan Davison, a sports council member, said: “It was really nice to see such an array of very talented young and more mature athletes gain recognition.

“It is especially encouraging to see the talents of the young athletes and the achievements they have made in local, regional and national competitions.

“This is very encouraging as we are concerned with the level of inactivity of young people these days.

“It is good to see the growth of clubs and the increasing number of new clubs to the Ross and Cromarty area.

“The sports council encourages new clubs to contact it for help with the start-up of clubs and can provide grant aid towards training, travel, equipment and excellence grants available.

“The sports council has one more meeting before the end of this financial year and clubs are encouraged to apply for grant aid.”

At the last committee meeting more than £1500 was issued to club members including Chanonary Sailing Club, Highland Disability Sports, Ross County Athletic Club, Dingwall Football Club and Ross and Cromarty Curling Province.

The grants were awarded for excellence, equipment, travel and coaching.
