MUIR of Ord Rovers gained sweet revenge on fellow North Caledonian League side Clachnacuddin when they defeated the Inverness outfit 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the SWL Cup last Saturday.

Rovers lost 2-1 to the Lilywhites the week before in the league but by there was to be no slip up on this occasion as the Tarradale team won with something to spare.

It didn’t start too well for Rovers who were a goal behind after 23 minutes when Scott Davidson found the back of the net with a stunning free kick which flew into the net.

However, parity was restored five minutes later when he tucked away a cutback from Daniel MacLennan, who had ran from the halfway line to set up the chance.

Rovers got their noses in front seven minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty after Dance was bundled over in the box. David Taylor made no mistake from the spot to put Rovers 2-1 up.

John MacLeod got in the act in the 74th minute when he scored with a screamer of a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box after Taylor’s short corner teed him up.

Rovers were in full flight now and MacLennan added a fourth goal in the 80th minute when he scored from close range following another Taylor assist.

MacLeod completed the scoring in the final minute when he neatly lobbed the keeper from 12 yards after good work from Dance.

Alness United were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat against Golspie Sutherland at King George V Park.

Tommy Campbell gave Golspie the lead in the 25th minute with an unstoppable shot which flew into the net.

Shane Sutherland doubled the home side’s lead five minutes from the break when he knocked the ball into the net off the underside of the crossbar following a goalmouth scramble.

The tie was as good as won on the hour mark when Sutherland netted again, this time with a 20-yard free kick which nestled in the top corner.

Golspie had the chance to increase their lead in the last minute when they were awarded a penalty after Darren MacGregor was tripped in the box. MacGregor took the spot kick himself but blasted wide of target.

In the other tie, Invergordon put up a credible show against Thurso but goals from James Murray and Sandy Sutherland were enough to see the Vikings through to the last four.

After a goal-less first half Murray broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he raced on to a Sutherland pass and guided the ball past Stephen Campbell in the Invergordon goal.

The second and decisive goal came 10 minutes later when Sutherland fired a superb volley past Campbell from an acute angle.

Thurso continued to press but Campbell came to his side’s rescue with a couple of memorable saves before the end.

Fixtures – Saturday, November 24 – League – 1.30pm – Golspie Sutherland v Halkirk United; Invergordon v Clachnacuddin; Thurso v Alness United.
