AFTER tucking away the Ross-shire County championship over his home course for the first time earlier this month Alan Cameron squared up to his nephew Lewis Reid in last Saturday’s final of the Fortrose and Rosemarkie club championship.
Over the past three seasons the Fortrose nephew and uncle have held the title and Reid went into into last Saturday’s final as the defending champion. In the semi-final he had ousted the club secretary, Mike MacDonald on the 17th green while Cameron went the full distance to get the better of Chris Gaittens on the final green.
Lewis, after winning the second hole, held his advantage until they turned for home on the tenth tee, a hole Cameron birdied to level and then pull away from his younger opponent. He won the 12th and 13th holes to go two in front before the 14th was halved in threes, Reid missing an eagle chance from 10 feet. Cameron went dormy three in front from another birdie at the next hole and sealed a 3&2 win on the 16th green.
Former greenkeeper Kevin Fowler won the handicap championship beating Steven Bassingdale in the final (3&2) and the women’s scratch championship was won by Jeanette Kennedy-Spence after a comfortable 6&5 win over Marsha Fraser in the final. The handicap champion is Joan Darroch after her 14 hole success over Annette McArthur.
TAIN Golf Club’s run as champions of the Ross-shire and Sutherland women’s clubs extended to 12 years after another win by their formidable women’s section last weekend at Fortrose and Rosemarkie where the host club failed to make any kind of challenge for either trophy.
In the team event of four players the Gordon Salver was won with a 77 from Claire Ross, and two 81s from sisters Anne Ryan and Mary Smith. Lynda Thomson completed the Tain quartet but her score was not included in the winning 54 hole total of 239 which finished eleven shots ahead of Royal Dornoch.
Royal Dornoch’s scorer’s were Alison Bartlett 82, Claire Riddell 83 and Dorothy Lloyd 85. The handicap Connon salver was won by Golspie Golf Club’s third team of Ann Duff (31) 72, Lauren Bonner (21) 83, and Lesley Cranna (28) 83 for a nett total of 229. Their fourth non-counting score came from Hazel Proctor and they finished two shots in front of their own first team of Anne Macrae, Helen Ewan, Sheila Robertson and Noel Mackay.
