ONE of Muir of Ord Golf Club’s leading amateurs of the 80s, Kenny Hutton, won the Scottish Midland Alliance Championship played at Crieff Golf Club.

Hutton, now 49, was a member of the Muir of Ord teams which won back to back Northern Counties Cups in 1986 and 1987 and who went on to have a successful club professional career.

He has been a professional at Drumpellier Golf Club and is currently attached to the Downfield Golf Club in Dundee. His parents still reside in Muir of Ord and they own the Priory Hotel.

Presently serving as captain of the Scottish Region of the PGA, Hutton enjoyed three individual wins on the Alliance circuit this season before signing off with the championship success at Crieff following a three hole play-off against two amateurs, Gary Tough (Edzell) and Willie Hutton (Pitlochry).

They had tied on 36-hole totals of 145, with Kenny having scores of 74 and 71. Tough got eliminated at the first hole and Willie at the third hole to a birdie three.

Black Isle Foursomes

THE Black Isle Foursomes at Fortrose and Rosemarkie this weekend has both the scratch and handicap winning couples of 12 months ago aiming to defend their titles.

Scratch holders Chris Gaittens and Michael MacDonald, who also won in 2010, are attempting an unprecedented first hat-trick of local scratch wins.

Defending the handicap cup are Mark Windsor from the home club and his partner Jarred Simpson (Nairn) who won for the first time last year.

Bidding to halt the local scratch hat-trick are two sets of former winners who have triumphed nine times between them over the past 17 years – Neil Hampton (Royal Dornoch) and Colin Taylor (Elgin), who have had five wins, and Alan Cameron (Fortrose) and Ewan Forbes (Inverness), who have won it four times.

Strongly fancied to make an impact this weekend are North District Champion, Bruce Thomson (Nairn) and the in form North Scottish Alliance champion Bryan Fotheringham (Inverness).

Other couples to catch the eye are North Golf Alliance champion Dougie Thorburn (Thurso) and partner Munro Ferries (Tain), and the local pairings of former handicap section winners Kevin Fowler and Michael Manson, and Lewis Reid and Morty Ross.
