Opportunity will be the word of the day when Kilmarnock come calling at Ross County tomorrow.
With talk already prominent over the last few weeks that every match until the end of the season has to be approached like a cup final, that will possibly never be more evident during the run-in than this weekend’s match.
Eight games remain for the Staggies to secure their Premiership status for a third consecutive campaign, and a win tomorrow would go a long way towards achieving that goal.
County are currently one place, and one point, ahead of Kilmarnock in the league table, also boasting the advantage of having a game in hand over the Rugby Park outfit before the end-of-season split.
Opening up a cushion to the bottom of the table with three more points could be crucial over the run-in.
Jason Naismith, who returned to Dingwall this season after leaving the club the last time they were relegated in 2018, is under no illusions as to how big the fixture is, and how important that gap could prove should the Staggies win.
“It would be massive,” the 26-year-old former Hibernian man insisted.
“It would be a real hammer blow to them as well.
“Obviously you just need to take one game at a time, but we’re a point above Killie with a game in hand.
“If we win on Saturday that goes to four points with a game in hand, so that has to be a real motivation.
“Hopefully the boys are aware of how big of a game it is, and I’m sure they will be.”
Being at home for the next two weeks could be another advantage for County.
“It’s about time we realised the importance of these games,” Naismith added.
“We need to dig in and graft to win the games, we don’t have any divine right to win any game just because we beat Celtic.
“The quicker we realise that the better. We’ve got two home games coming up that are very winnable, so we’ll try and take maximum points from every game.”
