Malky Mackay believes Ross County are in a strong enough position that he will only have to dip back into the transfer market for select players.

The Staggies have already signed eight new players over the summer, reinforcing all areas of the park.

With just four players who were in the first team squad at the end of last season departing in the current transfer window, there is more strength in depth with a number of players who are hungry to make their mark in the Scottish Premiership.

That said, there is the best part of a month left in the window for deals to be done. Mackay has not ruled out more movement in that time, but says there is no particular position he feels desperately needs upgrading and nothing is imminent in terms of senior outgoings.

“I’ve not put a number on it," the Staggies boss reasoned.

“We were reasonably fortunate this year in terms of the amount of players we got in early. If another one or two come up fair enough, and we’ve got four weeks for that still to happen.

"If one or two of the correct ones on our list pop up, then we would do it, but there’s nothing that I’m really desperate for, right now.

“We’ve had a couple of younger ones go out in the last couple of days and another one or two might yet go out.

“In the last week of the window, if something comes in from England – depending on who the players would be – then we would look and see if people who were maybe going to get less game time want to do something else.

“If you look at how threadbare we became last year, just through a lot of untimely injuries, I’m conscious that for the first half of the season I’d rather have players here that I can call upon than trim down a reasonably efficient squad.”

County are currently preparing to open their Premiership campaign away at defending champions Celtic on Saturday lunchtime.

There are not many tougher ways to kick off a new season, but Mackay feels his side are as ready as they can be after a minimal summer break.

“Like everyone else probably, I’d love another month, but we don’t get that," he added.

"We had two and a half weeks’ break from our last competitive fixture to us having to come back.

“Liverpool are playing Bayern Munich in Asia with all sorts of pre-season games still going on over there while we’re straight back into it, but the World Cup year meant that was always going to be the case.

“I think we’ll see a lot of clubs settling over the next six weeks, rather than actually hitting the ground running.”
