Ross County fans may well be licking their lips in anticipation as Dundee travel to Dingwall tomorrow, knowing the last time the two teams met it resulted in the Staggies’ biggest ever top-flight victory.

If that is how supporters feel, though, there is a very different approach being taken inside the Global Energy Stadium.

As far as County’s coaches and players are concerned, they cannot read anything into the Dens Park demolition, and they will have to start all over again come kick-off this weekend.

“You’ve got to look at it in isolation,” assistant manager Don Cowie said.

“It’s three points, and we did a lot of things right that night. If every member of your team does things right and gets pass marks, the majority of the time you’re going to win, and that’s what happened.

“It just so happened we scored five goals, and we were very clinical. There are lots of other games where we have created a similar number of opportunities.

“We haven’t quite taken them, so you’ve got to look at that one game in isolation. It’s a new game, Dundee have responded brilliantly since that match, so it’s going to be a tough one for us.

“They’ve shown great character. To lose a game 5-0 is never nice, but James (McPake) has obviously got a squad that can respond, they have shown that.

“They’ve had three wins and two defeats – against the Old Firm which can happen in the league – so they will be delighted with the way they have responded from it.”

It is set up to be an extremely busy period before the winter break for Ross County.

Before two weeks off in early January, they still have seven matches to play, but there is at least one saving grace for them in wintry conditions – more than half are at home.

Cowie is aiming to give the Staggies faithful some timely presents in the form of strong performances to reward their recent vocal support.

“The fans have been great this season,” Cowie said.

“We would have liked to have picked up more points at home, but in the last two games we beat Hibs and drew with Dundee United, and they were excellent.

“You see the group that’s gathering in the bottom corner, and that’s massive for us.

“The players really appreciate that atmosphere that they’re trying to create, but it’s also up to us on the pitch to give them something to get excited about.

“I think they can see that – they can see players on the pitch that get them on the edge of their seats, so long may it continue and keep improving.”
