Malky Mackay insists spirits are still high at Ross County, despite slipping to the foot of the Premiership table.

Dundee United’s win at Motherwell last time out sent the Staggies to the bottom, but it is still close between several teams in the battle to avoid relegation.

That should give cause for optimism to a County side whose heads have never really dropped this season.

“People might say that’s weird, but I can only go with evidence I’m seeing in terms of their togetherness,” Mackay explained.

“Between Celtic, St Johnstone and Aberdeen, taking only these three weeks, we’ve ran Celtic and Aberdeen really hard - two teams in a good run of form - and we’ve had a good win down at St Johnstone.

“I like to think I’m not kidding myself, or trying to kid the public, because it quite quickly comes back to you.

“You see the way we are working, and the statistics even against Aberdeen – the way we played and chances we created – it doesn’t look like a team that’s chucked it.

“That’s where I’m at with our group at the moment. I’m really enjoying training them every day. They’re upbeat through what they’re playing and the confidence of me showing them the evidence.

“That lends itself for the last six games, with points to play for and twists and turns to come.”

Mackay’s task will be made somewhat easier in the coming weeks by a host of players returning from injury.

Yan Dhanda already made his comeback against Aberdeen, coming on for the second 45 minutes last Friday night.

This weekend at Hearts, he will be followed by David Cancola, Alex Iacovitti and Jordy Hiwula, while Jordan Tillson, Alex Samuel, and Ben Purrington could return for the Staggies post-split.
