ROSS-SHIRE netball is on the up and up with more opportunities than ever to get involved.

Dingwall Dolphins netball team got into the swing with a successful pre-season friendly with recently formed Thurso Ladies and juniors.

A mixed junior squad played against Thurso junior team, beating them by twenty goals in a 40-minute game.

The northern team, although outclassed by the experienced Dingwall accurate shooting duo of Tamzene and Grace, showed they have the desire to do better as they fought hard for every point.

The senior team played a full hour game using the junior players to make up the team, winning 56-23. Experienced shooter Jermaine McCracken, on court with her daughter Tamzene in a rare chance to play together, were difficult to stop in the circle.

The defence, boosted by Bethany, Melissa, Lizzie and Jacqui on a rotation, made a real impression on the Thurso team attack. Centre court players, Kate and Joy moved the ball swiftly working well together. The junior players are all aged 14 or 15 and played really well against adult players.

Coach Jermaine McCracken said, "These are some of our best regional junior players who have consistently shown their commitment to the sport of netball. We are training once a month in Dingwall and I am hoping to start up two netball teams in Inverness during September to give more female team players a chance to get together, improve their skills and join in the regular monthly events.

"As a UKCC level 2 coach for the sport I am available during the day to work in schools if required. This is an ideal opportunity to improve the profile of sport for women especially as 2013 is World Youth Netball Championships to be held in Glasgow followed in 2014 by the Commonwealth Games which features netball once again. I have established Netball North to drive the growth of this fun social activity for women across the Highlands."

Inverness-based clubs are due to start up at Charleston Academy, Smithton Free Church Hall and Inverness Academy. A regular monthly tournament is held in Dingwall, Grantown or Gordonstoun on the first Saturday of the month for friendly competition. Workplace teams are welcome to join the event, just contact Jermaine directly on 07803706842 or join Netball North on Facebook.
