The 23-year-old goalkeeper from Nairn received a new deal to remain at the Staggies for the 2023/24 Premiership campaign.

Having been part of the Ross County set-up since 2017 and having spent time on loan at Brora Rangers, Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and Alloa Athletic, Munro has been given an opportunity to show what he can do inbetween the sticks during the Viaplay Cup group stages.

He played in last weekend’s 5-1 win over Stranraer, and with regular number one Ross Laidlaw out injured, he is likely to start against Greenock Morton in Dingwall on Saturday.

Munro says he was pleased to be offered a new contract at Ross County, saying it was a sign that manager Malky Mackay has faith in his ability.

Speaking about receiving a new contract, he said: “It was a big vote of confidence for me, he is a great gaffer and for him to show his trust in me and give me a new contract was brilliant.

“Goalkeeper is a tough position as there is a number one and a number two.

“But myself and Ross have a great relationship.

“Whoever plays we are obviously supporting each other. Ross has the number one shirt at the moment just now and rightly so.

“He was brilliant for the club last season. I am here to support him and if I am called upon then I do have big boots to fill.”

Munro is keen to show what he can do during the Viaplay Cup group stages, where he is expected to start every match.

He is keen to show Mackay what he can do and prove he can be a vital part of the team.

“It was good to get the start, the gaffer has obviously put the trust in me for the League Cup campaign.

“Obviously Ross Laidlaw is out with an injury at the moment, but I am delighted to step in and make a contribution to the boys.

“The gaffer has asked me to be reliable that if anything happens, like has just now, that I can step in and he can trust me to play well.”

Munro also started in the pre-season matches against Queen’s Park and his home town team Nairn County.

He hopes that being part of the Ross County first team can inspire other aspiring footballers in the Highlands that they can make it at the top level.

“We have seen it in the past with a lot of the boys,” says Munro.

“Hopefully I can be one of those players who have come out of the Highlands and have done well. There is a long way to go, but hopefully I can inspire other boys to push through and know that it is possible.”
