MALKY Mackay is confident a big January shopping spree has added healthy bites to Ross County’s attack.

For all the positives to be drawn from certain performances this season, there is no disputing the fact the Staggies have sometimes looked toothless and relied too heavily on Jordan White.

Their 20 goals-for from 25 games remains the Premiership’s lowest for now.

Mackay added Eamonn Brophy on loan from St Mirren, Simon Murray in a cash deal from Queen’s Park, and young Wigan loanee Josh Stones among five transfer window captures.

“It puts real pressure on anybody here already,” Mackay said. “Eamonn is proven at Premiership level and Simon has been on fire (with 18 goals already) and played in the Premiership before.

“It’s great to get Alex Samuel back fit, while Josh is just a youngster but acts like a man. He has come in with a real verve.

“There’s a real scramble for places now on top of Jordan, Jordy Hiwula and Dom Samuel. Even last year, we were having to find goals from a lot of other places and there was a lot of burden on Jordan’s shoulders – too much.

“In the last week, you can see that weight lifting off his shoulders. It’s refreshing because since I have been here, we have been a bit bereft of forwards.

“A really good window has given us more teeth up front.”

County return to action against St Mirren hosts Mackay is full of respect for, including manager and friend Stephen Robinson.

Victory – with one win apiece so far this term – could be vital in the bottom of the table scrap with Dundee United, Kilmarnock and Motherwell.

Only Ben Purrington and Ben Paton are out long-term, but Wigan loanee Gwion Edwards could get his first involvement.
