Ross County manager Malky Mackay believes their 3–1 victory over Motherwell on Tuesday night will make other Premiership teams sit up and take notice.

The Staggies took the lead right at the end of a cagey first half through a Sondre Solholm Johansen own goal, brought about by excellent work from Regan Charles-Cook.

Motherwell came out fighting at the start of the second half, though, and were pushing forward before Jordan Roberts picked out the top corner from 25 yards to equalise.

It appeared as though the momentum would continue to go the visitors’ way when Jordan Tillson was sent off for a tackle on Roberts, but instead it was County who went up a gear.

A quick break forward after Dominic Samuel won the ball back in Motherwell’s half led to Charles-Cook restoring the lead, and he sealed the points from the penalty spot.

Knowing what others may have expected at 1–1 with the Staggies down to 10, then, Mackay expected clubs across the country to be making a point of finding out how the final score came about.

“I’m really proud of them tonight,” he explained.

“People throughout the country would have seen it was 1–1 in the second half, with Ross County down to 10 men, then we got a 3–1 win. A lot of people will look at that and wonder what actually happened there.

“We merited the win, we were terrific when we went down to 10 men especially.

“I thought our defence stood up so well. They didn’t sink back, they stayed firm higher up the park, and managed to fend off a lot of challenges.

“We were brave enough to go 4–3–2 instead of just sinking in and taking everything that they’ve got, which meant that when we did win it we were able to feed it forward and get a bit of link play. I’m really proud, especially with 10 men – it took everyone.”
