Malky Mackay drew positives from today's home defeat to Rangers – and believes it might have been a different outcome for his team with a little bit of ruthlessness in front of goal.

The Staggies didn’t manage to score against Rangers, but they had several chances to put the ball in the net.

Coupled with a goalless second 45 minutes in which Ross County played positively, the Staggies' boss felt he didn't have too much to be disheartened about.

Mackay said: “You’ve got to take your chances against the Old Firm – I talked about this a few weeks ago at Parkhead, where we did get chances.

“We should have taken our good chances, while Rangers took their half-chances – because the two goals they scored were half-chances.”

The Staggies had a flurry of opportunities right after half-time, and Mackay believes they should have hauled themselves back into the match.

He stressed: “At half-time, I spoke about us being braver and being on the front foot more, being touch tight in taking the game to Rangers.

“We made a couple of tweaks to the system and put a couple of subs on – and I thought we did that in the second half.

“Five minutes into the second half, we get the great chance where Jordan (White) has the header and, on another day, it goes in.

“It’s a pretty good chance and that would have taken it down to a goal.”

In the end, Rangers came away with a 2-0 victory with goals from the returning Kemar Roofe and a wondrous James Tavernier strike being enough to send the visitors back down the A9 with all three points.

Mackay added: “Looking at the goals I thought they were two very, very good goals we've lost.

“So, fair play as far as that goes, I can't really complain about the two goals – it was a bit of quality on both parts from their players who scored the goals.”
