Ross County Cricket Club’s season ended on a downbeat note, losing narrowly to Forres last weekend.

It was already a meaningless fixture for County, whose chances of winning the Nosca Senior League title ended at the start of this month, but their hosts now face a winner-take-all match against Northern Counties tomorrow.

Still, it was a disappointing way to wrap up the campaign against a side they had already beaten three times in 2021.

“It was very close, but we got a few things wrong in the match – and I think the captain will acknowledge that as well,” Chris Blake said.

“We made some bad decisions with our batting line-up and the toss, and that ultimately cost us.

“We needed to tighten up our bowling. We had 27 extras, so when you fall nine runs short you look at that on paper and say that’s what cost us the match.

“We were just a little bit lax on Saturday with the way we approached the game in terms of our tactics, and we were just a bit loose with our bowling.”

That said, 2021 has been a good year overall for County.

They were victorious in both the Senior Cup and the T20 Cup, so this season will be fondly remembered at Castle Leod.

“The season has been great,” Blake added.

“The two cup victories were outstanding, they were the first trophies we’ve had for 20 years so that was great. What cost us in the league was not having a consistent enough team out every Saturday.

“If you look at Northern Counties, they had a very settled team. We just didn’t have that.

“We had too many people coming and going into the team, and I think that’s what led to inconsistency and what cost us in the long run.

“If we can get that commitment and get guys playing to their ability then we like to think we can push for the league next year.”
