Jack Baldwin admits even he was taken by surprise by his wondergoal against St Johnstone.

The centre back looked to have scored a 90th minute winning goal for Ross County on Wednesday night as he found the bottom corner from 25 yards out.

However, the Perth Saints would still manage find an even later equaliser to ensure the match ended 3-3.

It was a vital goal in terms of the Staggies’ Premiership survival bid, but it was also a career highlight for Baldwin personally – saying it has to be one of his best ever efforts.

“I don’t know why I even attempted it, to be honest!” the former Sunderland man laughed.

“It’s one of those, I probably won’t have too many more of them in my career, but it felt good to be on the scoresheet – which is something I haven’t really managed to do that much this season.

“It was nice to contribute, and I’d say it was the best goal of my career.

“The other ones have all been headers in the box and scruffy goals. So, yes, I’ll take that as the best one.”

Baldwin’s strike has helped to tee up a final day where Ross County could still finish in anywhere in the league’s bottom three.

It is a whole new situation for Baldwin, but that is where he feels manager Malky Mackay will have a crucial role to play.

“The pedigree and know-how he brings seeps into us as players,” Baldwin added.

“We know we could’ve been a lot better across the whole season, but the gaffer brings that real calmness and has that kind of presence in these situations.

“The manager and the staff believe in us massively.

“Over the last few weeks he’s really spoken about that need for a calm head on the shoulders. We can only affect what we do.

“We keep all the external noise from other teams out of our heads and just take each game as it comes.”
