Ross Laidlaw insists there is still better to come from him, despite being lauded as Ross County’s top performer by manager John Hughes.

The former Hibernian goalkeeper has been one of the most consistent performers this season, with form particularly impressive since the turn of the year.

Only Dundee United’s Benjamin Siegrist has made more saves than Laidlaw in the 2020/21 Premiership campaign, although the County shotstopper’s clean sheet and percentage save rate has suffered amid the team’s defensive difficulties.

With five post-split matches now ahead of them, the presence of a 6ft 4in bulwark at the peak of his powers might well prove crucial to survival fortunes.

Laidlaw, though, insists he can still improve.

He said: “I came here with a view to securing football week in, week out, and I’ve played every game for Ross County since the gaffer came in, just before Christmas.

“The other goalkeepers at the club, Joe Hilton and Ross Doohan before him, deserve credit for keeping the pressure on me.

“Results haven’t always been the best for the club, but personally I think I’ve done okay.

“I need to keep performing and try to add a wee five per cent extra to my game, which is something the manager and I have spoken about.

“I’d never worked with the gaffer before, but he’s been great for me and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“He’s brought fresh ideas to the club and knows how to bring the best out of individuals.”

County have a free weekend approaching and a Scottish Cup date seven days later, before beginning the last five bottom-half fixtures away to Kilmarnock.

Laidlaw added: “After the result at the weekend, you’d prefer to be straight back out there again for another game, but we’ll use the time well.

“We’re not going to take any time off and we’ll keep working hard to ensure we climb the table.”
