Kintail challenge lures 700-plus

IN EXCESS of 700 people were part of the 26th Great Wilderness Challenge held in Kintail at the weekend.

Walkers, runners and marshals descended on Morvich Farm in what was described by organisers as a "seamless transition" from the usual venue of Poolewe.

The event is set to substantially boost the £2.5million raised for good causes since the event was started from small beginnings back in 1986.

The event offers a number of challenges with eight and 18-mile routes for runners and 18-, 10- and eight-mile routes for walkers, with a variety of age categories.

The local winners were Colin Meek, Dundonnell in the 18 and Ritchie Macrae, Gairloch in the eight-mile events.

Organisers paid warm tribute to the tremendous support from the local Kintail community, especially the National Trust Kintail and Inverinate Estate. The "safety net" was provided by Kintail Mountain Rescue, supported by Dundonnell Mountain Rescue.

Portree High School Pipe Band piped in all walkers and runners.
