The Staggies lacked a cutting edge for the most part last weekend at Dundee United, but Kettlewell’s substitutions added a new level of intensity to their play.

Michael Gardyne and Harry Paton came on initially to being energy and creativity to the County midfield, before Oli Shaw replaced Billy Mckay to score a consolation goal in a 2–1 defeat.

Tom Grivosti had also replaced the injured Connor Randall and impressed, which is exactly what Kettlewell was looking for from his changes.

The County boss has tried to make full use of the options at his disposal so far this season.

He has given players chances to impress, but he is looking for them to take it with both hands.

Kettlewell works with players all week in training, but what they do in matches is what makes a difference.

“People are frustrated when they don’t start games, but the only way you change a manager’s mind is by having an impact,” he said.

“It might only be five or 10 minutes, but that raw energy, desire and application to the game can catch a manager’s attention.

“When Oli came on and applied himself last weekend, he gets his goal and you can see his energy and ability to run in behind defenders – that all caught my imagination.

“Right across the board sometimes guys go into games frustrated at not starting, but equally they don’t really do anything when they get an opportunity to get on the pitch.

“It’s important that players look at every moment in a game as an opportunity to impress and get themselves in the team the next week.

“Players need to make an impact, that’s on them whether it’s from the start or coming off the bench, and with the ability to make five substitutions now, there are more guys who have that opportunity than there has been previously.”
