INVERGORDON are riding high at the top of the North Caledonian League after an 8-0 victory against Halkirk United at the Recreation Grounds, but manager Gary Campbell feels there is still scope for his side to get better.

The Easter Ross outfit produced a near-perfect performance against a Halkirk side that had gone three matches unbeaten before Saturday’s clash.

“It was a good result, but we could have scored a lot more goals,” said Campbell.

“Without being startling we did alright in spells, but we are not playing well enough throughout the game.

“I was quite happy going in at half time 2-0 up as we were against the wind and the sun in the first half. I can’t complain too much, I was happy with the clean sheet.”

Kyle MacLean gave Invergordon the lead in the eighth minute with a shot from the edge of the area.

Darran Goller doubled the lead five minutes from the break when he rounded the keeper and the forward scored again early in the second half with a near-identical finish to put Invergordon on easy street.

By this time Halkirk keeper Sean Milligan was unable to continue after suffering a head knock in the first half and his stand-in was unable to stem the tide as the home side rattled in five more goals without reply.

Defender Scott Houston claimed an unlikely hat trick, all headers from set pieces, and Ken Morrison and Ian Penwright were also on target for free-scoring Invergordon.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s match against Bunillidh Thistle at Couper Park, the Invergordon boss said: “If we want to win the league it is a game we need to win.

“We drew at Bunillidh a couple of years ago and it cost us. They’ve improved a lot since last season, it won’t be easy.”

Kyle MacDonald is still out but Shaun Kerr should be available again after missing last week’s match.

St Duthus made it seven straight wins with a clinical 5-0 victory against Bunillidh Thistle at Grant Park.

Liam Rostock (2), Ross Tokely, Mikey Rae and Charlie MacDonald got the goals.

Elsewhere, Inverness Athletic defeated Bonar Bridge 5-0, while Orkney and Golspie Sutherland drew 4-4.
