The league title slipped just beyond their grasp as Loch Ness – based in Fortrose – clinched their first ever crown.

However, Invergordon did add their final three points to the board last weekend when they won 2-1 away in Orkney.

Toby MacLeod had put the islanders ahead as the hour mark approached, but two late goals turned the game around in Invergordon’s favour.

First Jordan Knight equalised with 15 minutes left to play, before Ruaridh Patience found the back of the net to win it for Gary Campbell’s men in the 80th minute.

Now, there is a bigger prize on offer as the North Caledonian Cup trophy is up for grabs.

Despite finishing second in the league standings, the odds are against Invergordon to an extent tomorrow afternoon.

That is because they will be facing Golspie Sutherland on their own patch – always a tough place for any North Caley team to go.

Invergordon can take confidence, though, from recording a league double over Golspie, winning 1-0 away from home and scoring six at the Highland Football Academy just a couple of weeks ago with the season drawing to a close.

Golspie finished sixth in the table this season, but only three points behind Fort William in third after a highly competitive campaign.

They can boast a win over champions Loch Ness to get to this stage of the cup competition though, winning 2-1 in the semi final.

Before that, they had knocked out Halkirk United and Bonar Bridge.

Invergordon, meanwhile, won their opening round contest against Thurso 7-0 before sneaking past Inverness Athletic in extra time in the quarter final.

Then, they moved to within a game of a second trophy this season with a 2-0 win over Nairn County A in the semi finals, with the goals on that occasion coming from Benjamin Kelly and Stuart Leslie.

Elsewhere, St Duthus also completed their campaign last weekend with one last league game against Fort William.

Third was still in the balance, but the points went to the former Highland League side as Fort William won 4-0.

Martin Munro’s second half double added to Andrew Mclean and Jamie McConnell’s strikes, leaving the result in no doubt.
