Alex Iacovitti wants to keep providing a goal threat for Ross County when he ventures forward at set-pieces.

The 24-year-old defender halved the deficit in the Staggies’ ultimately unsuccessful attempt at a comeback against St Mirren last time out, also hitting the bar with a header that would not have counted anyway due to an offside.

Iacovitti’s three goals in all competitions puts him second in the club’s scoring charts so far this season, only behind Blair Spittal, and he hopes to keep making a contribution at the opposite end of the pitch than he is used to.

“I said at the start of the season to everyone in the changing room that I wanted to get more goals,” former Oldham Athletic defender Iacovitti said.

“Last year I think I got four in all competitions, and I’m on three just now.

“If that’s something I can do in games then I will be all over that.

“One of my strengths is in the air, so if we can utilise that at set-pieces then I will try my best to get as many as I can for the team.

“The priority for the team is clean sheets of course, but if I can add goals to the team I will do my best to do that too.”

Clean sheets have been all too rare for the Staggies this season, with just two in all competitions – against Brora Rangers in the League Cup group stage and against St Johnstone on the opening day of the Premiership.

County are no strangers to seeing their goals conceded column showing the highest number of anyone in the league, something Iacovitti is aware must change.

“That’s a big one for me as a centre back, to try and keep that number as low as possible,” he insisted.

“I’m sure we will start picking up more clean sheets as we go on throughout the season.

“It has been a tough start, but like I said before we’re more than ready for Saturday now and hopefully we can go from there.”
