John Hughes says Ross County cannot afford to dwell on the defeat to Dundee United last Saturday.
The Staggies came undone by goals from Lawrence Shankland and Ryan Edwards in a match where they had 58 per cent of the possession with nothing to show for it.
Once again, Hughes was not happy with how easily his side let goals in, but there were still reasons for him to be optimistic and he says County must put the defeat behind them now.
“It’s done and dusted,” he insisted.
“Even between the coaching staff, I like to do a post-match analysis on the rights and wrongs and try to implement it into your training, but after a Monday you have to move on.
“That’s the good thing about football, you get the opportunity to go again and try and get it right.
“The one thing I have seen since I’ve come here is an improvement in our style.
“We have scored goals, we have seen a wee turnaround in character, and even on Saturday after watching the game back I felt we were the better football team.
“Dundee United set us a trap, and it worked for them on a couple of occasions, but you have to put the ball in the back of the net.
“The goals that we lost were very frustrating. We got a corner, and four or five passes later it’s in the back of our net. Where we are, we can’t afford to do that, we have to be better than that.”
As far as Hughes is concerned, there is no lack of effort from the group – but that only makes defeats like Saturday’s all the more disappointing for the Staggies manager.
“Our guys had the courage to try and work something from a short corner, and if it comes off you’re standing there applauding it,” he said.
“It didn’t, and it cost us, but I’ll never stop my players from going and trying to express themselves to win.
“When the players give everything that they’ve got on a Saturday and we get undone by one or two mistakes, you really feel for them.”
