Former boss Stuart Kettlewell said he would try and dip into the market, and even though the man in the dugout has changed, the club’s intentions in January have stayed the same.

Speculation over Ross Stewart’s future may have led to fears Hughes would be forced to act, but he is insisting there is no need to sell any player, and instead he is looking at incomings to help the club fight against relegation.

“In terms of bringing players in, I had a meeting on Monday in terms of what needs to be done,” Hughes, speaking ahead of County’s trip to Hibernian, said.

“We’ll see if we can bring one or two players in through the month to help the group along.

“Possibly after Wednesday we could have a few, but we will be like every other team.

“If we see players we can get that will help the team, I’d like to think we can do it.”

Although the club is under no financial pressure to sell, there are only so many spots in the Staggies squad.

County’s squad is already a big one, which has proven to be very valuable after being hit by a raft of injuries and suspensions.

So with the prospect of new arrivals on the horizon, Hughes says everyone knows that their futures may be at stake when they step on to the pitch.

“The boys know they are playing for their futures here and they don’t need me to tell them that,” he insisted.

“Even if you are flying, you don’t rest on your laurels. Most managers will tell you the best time to bring players in is when you are flying.

“It is all hands on deck for us and I don’t need to explain that, they realise it.

“I tell them they are doing something that they love so they have to go and express themselves, to not let the position we are in get them down. Let the position we are in inspire them and do something about it.

“I have trust and belief in them. They have to take that next step now.”
