Highland Boxing Academy fighters claim winning decisions at Phoenix show

Two Ross-shire boxers were victorious as Highland Boxing Academy return to domestic action on club shows.
Steven Munro from Tain and Emma Miller, originally from Dingwall, both stepped inside the ring at Lochaber Phoenix’s show at the Caol Community Centre and picked up wins via decision.
Munro’s was a clear cut success after he dropped the host club’s Kevin Aitchison in the first round, claiming the win by unanimous decision.
Miller’s bout was a closer affair as she was given the split decision over Broxburn’s Hannah Page.
“Emma’s was a really close bout, but she got the nod for it on a split decision,” HBA head coach Liam Foy said.
“It was a great win after losing down at the Lonsdale Box Cup which was a high level tournament, so it was good for her to get a win in her second bout for the club.
“That was a first competitive win for her, so it was great, and Steven’s was unanimous, he actually dropped his opponent in the first round with a devastating left hook to the body.
“I was surprised that his opponent got back up and got through the three rounds. Steven really tried to get the stoppage but credit to his opponent who managed to stay out of range.
“It was a great performance from Steven, who had a few bouts for us prior to going into lockdown and lost those on split decisions.
“They were really tough ones to take, so he really wanted to put in a solid performance that left no stone unturned and that’s exactly what he did last Saturday.”
A return to club shows marked an important moment for HBA. While national and international competitions are the more eye catching events to take part in, it is domestic shows like this one that builds the solid grounding that allows any boxer to reach the next level.
“They absolutely are our bread and butter over the competitive season,” Foy explained.
“Shows like this are how you build up the majority of your record. It’s just such a massive part of competitive boxing.
“In the Northern District there’s pretty much a show on every weekend, so it was great to get a shout and get some of our boxers involved in Lochaber’s show.
“As a boxer that’s the heart and soul, that’s where champions are developed and brought on. That’s the experience you take to the championship tournaments.”
