The Highland Amateur Cup will return for the first time in three years with the draw for the first round set to take place at The National Hotel in Dingwall tomorrow.

The biggest tournament in Highland amateur football will return, having not been played since 2019, after it was cancelled for the past two years due to Covid restrictions.

A number of teams of Ross-shire, who play in the Inverness and District League, are expected to be in the draw, along with clubs from Inverness, Caithness, Sutherland, the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland.

Wick Groats defeated Avoch in the last Highland Amateur Cup final in 2019.

Highland Amateur Cup secretary Hugh Morrison says organisers are looking forward to the competition’s return this summer.

“It is a great competition and the final is always a good day out,” said Morrison.

“There are a lot of good teams who enter the competition and it should be a great one this season again.

“We are still waiting for official confirmation of how many teams will be taking part in the tournament this year but the draw will take place on Saturday.”

All eight Ross-shire teams who play in the Inverness and District Football Association are expected to take part this season.

They include, Avoch, Black Isle United, Black Rock Rovers, Conon Bridge, Contin, Fortrose and Rosemarkie Union, Invergordon Social Club and Maryburgh.

It is also believed Inver and Lochbroom, who play in the North West Sutherland League, will also be entering the tournament this season.

Avoch were the last Ross-shire team to win the Highland Amateur Cup, when they beat Staxigoe United 2–1 in the final back in 2017.

They have won the competition six times in their history. Blackmuir, Maryburgh, Dingwall Thistle and Contin have also won the trophy.
