To have now joined the club where his great mentor made such a mark is an honour and challenge the experienced English defender is embracing with relish.

Baldwin (28), born in Barking, was just 18 when he left London to join Hartlepool just prior to the late Cooper’s second, 10-month spell in charge. Cooper took the youngster under his wing, sensing his disorientation at flying the family nest.

Spotting his promise, Cooper likened the non-academy prospect to the great Alan Hansen, given his mix of old-school defensive grit and silky, composed use of the ball.

Baldwin prospered and can now count over 300 senior appearances at clubs including Peterborough, Sunderland and, most recently, Bristol Rovers under Joey Barton.

County have signed a seasoned campaigner reaching his peak years – and Cooper would have approved.

“I played under Coops, God rest his soul, and he was brilliant to play for,” Baldwin said. “He was a larger than life character who loved his football. It was an enjoyable period. He was one of those guys who touched hearts wherever he went.”

Life in the lower leagues hasn’t exempted Baldwin from big occasions – he starred in front of 85,000 at Wembley as Sunderland lost the Checkatrade Trophy final to Portsmouth in March 2019. Life at the Stadium of Light brought attendances of 25-45,000. Scottish football offers similar, having signed for three years.

“It is a fresh start. I spoke to the manager and he outlined his plans. It is an exciting time to join the club,” he said. “Playing in front of bigger crowds is something I enjoy. I’m excited to visit new stadiums and face the likes of Celtic and Rangers.

“It has been a tough start for the lads, but these are games you’ve got to relish. To be one of the best, you’ve got to play against the best and try to overcome them.”
