Scottish Boys Championship

IN the halcyon years of 2008, 2009 and 2010, Ross-shire golf clubs saw up to six of their junior members participating in the national event.

Muir of Ord’s Jamie Whittet is a lone figure next week in the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boy’s championship, being staged over the Murcar Links golf course.

It is Whittet’s second tilt at a title — both he and Alness’s Ross Black played and went out in the first round last year at Dunbar, so the Muir teenager still has a point to prove. It’s quite a task for it is a title that has evaded north boys for more than 50 years.

Inverness’s Fraser Urquhart was the north’s last winner in 1959, and Brora’s Euan Polson the last finalist when the event was last played at Murcar Links, in 2005. Whittet is one of 15 north boys in the overall entry of 256.

Scottish Veteran Ladies

TAIN golf club’s Mary Smith has retained her place in the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golfing Association team to face Ireland’s senior women’s squad at Hilton Templepatrick Golf Club, near Belfast, on April 15 and 16. Smith’s younger sister Anne Ryan has been named as first reserve but joining Smith in the squad from Royal Dornoch is Alison Bartlet. The two teams of eight players compete for the Mary McKenna Cup.
