ST Duthus manager Stuart Ross hailed the contribution striker Ben Bruce has made in front of the net as he is racing away at the top of the North Caledonian League Division One goalscoring charts.

Bruce scored twice in the 4–1 win against Halkirk United to bring his total to nine this season in all competitions, five goals clear of Invergordon hitman Shaun Kerr.

Last season, Bruce scored 21 goals in 13 games on his way to be named the club’s player of the year.

Ross says he is delighted Bruce has continued his prolific form in front of goal.

“Ben has been a superb player for us,” complimented Ross.

“He reads the line really well at the top and brings three midfielders with him in the attack.

“He holds the ball up well, has great feet and an eye for goal and it is great to have him on board.”

St Duthus scored four goals in the space of 25 minutes but had to wait until the 53rd minute for Bruce to break the deadlock.

Bruce scored a penalty in-between Jake Lockett and Cammy Mackintosh finding the net, with Kyle Henderson grabbing a consolation for Halkirk.

St Duthus cross the Pentland Firth to take on bottom of the table Orkney in Stromness tomorrow with still a slim hope of being in title contention.

But Ross is pragmatic that a lot of other results will have to go their way for them to be crowned champions.

“We have a very outside chance of winning the title,” admitted Ross.

“Invergordon are looking very strong and we lost 4–0 to Golspie Sutherland who are much improved compared to the start of the season.

“Personally I think it is a two-horse race and we have missed the boat this season.

“But we will keep going to the end and look to get success in some cup competitions after new year as well.”
