Ross Sutherland Rugby Club captain Tom Bannerman believes the club have turned over a new leaf ahead of the 2022/23 season.

There are a number of changes for the Stags to contend with going into the new campaign.

A change in coaching structure has seen Stuart Macpherson appointed head coach in Invergordon, some senior players have hung up their boots and the Caledonian North Two has been expanded by Scottish Rugby.

The new coaching focus in particular could have an impact on how the Naval Grounds outfit performs this season, but Bannerman believes there has been a mentality shift too.

“It’s just a change of pace to how we’re doing training,” Bannerman said.

“We’re looking at different aspects of it – we’re slightly more technical. Last season we did a lot of fitness and then problem solving drills.

“We may see a slightly different structure to how we played last season, but I think that will be good for a few boys so I’m looking forward to it.

“I think there were a few things we had to learn from last season about where we had our targets. We’re being quite careful about what we want to achieve this season – not being over-ambitious, but being realistic.

“We will just take it game by game and not get too upset if we don’t get the results we’re looking for.”

Ross Sutherland’s season begins at home against Banff, and although the new clubhouse in Invergordon is not quite complete Bannerman still thinks being at home could play into the Stags’ hands.

“We’re at home which is always good,” he said.

“We have always struggled for away games just because of the nature of our league and having to travel far.

“Starting with a home game, we should have good numbers for it, and hopefully we can win and build momentum from there.”
