Muir of Ord, Ross-shire’s first winners of the cup in 1985 and then again the following year, were represented by Scott Forbes, Shaun Johnson, Jamie Whittet and Graeme Mellis.

In the quarterfinal tie, they faced Fortrose and Rosemarkie.

The Black Isle club, also two-time winners, were represented by Michael MacDonald, who was a member of both their previous winning teams, together with Chris Gaittens, Lewis Reid and Alan Cameron.

They won the local derby against Muir by four holes in the double matchplay format, where both couples play right to the final green.

MacDonald and Gaittens lost to Forbes and Johnson by one hole while Cameron and Reid beat Whittet and Mellis by five.

In earlier rounds, Strathpeffer Spa were put out by Fraserburgh and Tain lost to eventual semifinalists Nairn.

A much-fancied Nairn four were expected to reach the final but were denied by Fortrose and Rosemarkie who put up a supreme effort to win by a resounding nine holes, after a winning margin of 10 holes was built up by MacDonald and Gaittens against Fotheringham and Burgess.

Fortrose and Rosemarkie’s last cup success in 2006 came at Royal Aberdeen, when as underdogs they beat Torvean in the final. They were unable to pull off a repeat in last Saturday’s final against the Aberdeen-shire club MacDonald Ellon, who triumphed in the competition for the first time with a five-hole success.
