FORTROSE and Rosemarkie Golf Club bucked the trend with an entry topping sixty for their 36 hole MacGregor Industrial Supplies sponsored Black Isle Open last weekend.

However, the weather did not play ball with strong wind and rain spoiling many scores but two club members overcame the conditions to take home two trophies each.

With six wins already this season, Fortrose’s Alan Cameron confirmed his status as a links golfer with two rounds of 71 and 73 to beat his club mate Peter Cameron into second place. Cameron received the scratch cup, a voucher for £180 and also the confined to members Isa Ross Cup.

Club mate Steve Bassingdale led the handicap returns to lift the overall handicap cup and the confined to members Newton Cup along with a voucher of £150.

The scratch winner handed in a level par card of 71 (35/36) in round 1 with two birdies, the 4th and 13th and just the two bogies at the 7th and eleventh.

But this did not hold the first round lead. It was taken by his namesake Peter Cameron who began his round with birdie and added two more sub par figures by the ninth for an outward 33. His inward half began with birdie by but his advantage was lost over the next two holes with a bogey and double bogey for an inward 37 to lead with 70.

Local scratch trophy holder, Lewis Reid, could only manage two halves of 39 to lie too far back to make a second round challenge and also struggling after beginning with three bogies was recently crowned club champion Michael MacDonald, a 76 (38/38).

Alan Cameron’s second round birdie start was squandered with a double bogey three putt for five on the ninth green and an outward one over par 37. But he had overhauled the first round leader Peter Cameron who struggled to a first mine hole count of 39.

Peter Cameron’s triple bogey on the 10th hole put him further behind as Alan Cameron’s closing card of 73 won with 144. Peter Cameron took second place with recovery birdies on the 14th and 16th holes for a closing 75 and 145 aggregate.

The four scratch voucher winners all came from the home club. Chris Gaittens 74 and 73 for 147 and Lewis Reid 78 and 72 for 150. In the afternoon downpour Steve Bassingdale built on his first round nett 67, off 76, with an excellent nett 70 for 139 and into the low handicap section came only one visiting golfer, Bert Nicholson from Muir of Ord, whose nett 69 and 71 claimed third place.

There also came first and second places in the higher handicap section for local members. Jeremy Price won with nett 138 (70/68), off 16 handicap, while four shots behind came Davie Douglas with 18 handicap for cards of 73 and 69.

Alan Cameron had one of his six 18 hole wins at Royal Dornoch in May and will be hoping to emulate that same result when he plays in the 36 hole Sinclair Cup over Sutherland’s top course tomorrow (Saturday).

OFFICIALS of the Northern Counties Women’s Golf Association figured prominently in the Commonwealth Spoons foursomes competition at Spey Bay GC last last Sunday.

Before president Liz Coghill of Royal Dornoch stepped forward to present the winning partnership with their trophy and ticket to the Scottish finals at Ladybank in Fife in September she herself teamed up with Dornoch club mate Denise McBride to receive the third handicap prize.

Association secretary, Alison Bartlett and junior convenor Claire Riddell grossed 72 for a nett 69 winners with their trophy and the ticket to the SLGA’s Commonwealth Spoons grand final to be played at the Ladybank golf course in Fife. Royal Dornoch pair Coghill and McBride took third place in last season’s finals which was played over the Fortrose and Rosemarkie course.

Past Counties captain, Lynne Fraser (Fortrose and Rosemarkie), teamed up with Inverness’s Keri Harper to receive the leading scratch voucher for their gross 77 after the trophy went to Bartlett and Riddell.

It was announced this week that Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) and Tain sisters Anne Ryan and Mary Smith have been included in the Scottish Vets team to play England North, Midlands and South at the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral peninsula from August 5 to 7.
