The Munlochy athlete confirmed the news after he suffered defeat in the US Open first round when he lost 3–0 to Eain Yow Ng of Malaysia 11-4, 11-5, 11-8 in 48 minutes.

The 36-year-old, who started his career at Inverness Squash Club confirmed his retirement on social media.

He says he was proud to have played at the highest level and make a career out of the sport that he loved.

He wrote: “Enjoyed my last ever PSA match. Lucky to be able to play this sport. Lucky to be able to make a passion a profession. Lucky for this profession to bring me Olivia Clyne.

“Lucky to have had many great coaches and support throughout.”

The former Fortrose Academy pupil has been Scottish national champion 10 times. He represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games four times between 2010 and 2022 competing at Delhi, Glasgow, Gold Coast and Birmingham.

He won silver medal with Manchester in 2017 and earlier this year, won a bronze medal with Douglas Kempsell at Glasgow.

Lobban also paid tribute to Clyne on social media after his retirement.

He said: “Competing alongside this man was so much more enjoyable than competing against him.

“It’s been a pleasure to watch it all happen through the glass walls.”

During Clyne’s 15-year career on the PSA Tour, he claimed eight titles and reached 19 PSA finals.

Clyne's highest world ranking during his career was number 24 and before his PSA retirement was ranked 47th in the world.

Clyne was also part of the Scotland team which won bronze at the European Team Championship in Eindhoven in The Netherlands back in April.
