ROSS Sutherland RFC still have a way to go to complete their rugby season — not made any easier last Saturday when they were forced to turn back in mid-flight on their journey to Stornoway due to a mechanical fault.

The game will now be rescheduled around remaining fixtures against Highland and a touring team.

The club held an S1/S2 local schools event in near perfect conditions on the last day of term. Nairn ran out winners but the event helped identify a number of rising stars from Golspie, Tain and Alness.

A presentation was made to the club from the Invergordon District Initiative to give financial support in raising funds for a full-time rugby development officer.

The highlight of the weekend came on Sunday when the Ross U16 team won their fourth consecutive match, away to Kinross in the semifinal of the Caledonia Bowl competition. Tries were scored by Ian Smith (Golspie HS), Ross Gordon (Tain Royal Academy) and Andy Mackay (Alness) while Gabriel Dobson (Plockton HS) kicked all conversions and added a couple of penalties.

Callum Sangster (Invergordon) received a special mention in the 27-7 away win. The team now travel to St Andrews University on Sunday, April 29, where they will play Aberdeen Grammar in the final.
