Fitness the key as Stags run out comfortable winners over Moray

ANOTHER strong performance on Saturday saw Ross Sutherland secure a 25-0 win over Moray RFC, and rise to second place in BT Caledonia Div 2 North.
Delighted coach Ben Ockenden said everyone played their part in the win, adding: “We’ve worked hard on our fitness levels over the last month and it was clear just how much of an advantage this gave us as we were able to maintain a high tempo from first whistle to the last.”
The Stags were ahead inside four minutes through an Andrew Cook penalty. The first half was fast and furious and, when Moray were denied their only scoring chance by stout Ross defending, things boiled over and the referee sent a player from each side to the sin bin.
Early in the second half, Mike Gordon calmed the nerves, making a typically strong run to score. Andy Mackay added another, and when Gareth Braddick’s excellent run was halted, Kris Thomas was there in support to go on and score.
Joe Eaglesham secured the bonus point with try number four, and David Kennedy converted
The win lifts the Stags into second place in BT Caledonia League Div 2.
Next league fixture is Saturday, February 20 at home to Aberdeen Wanderers.
ROSS Sutherland’s U-15s were in Caledonia Cup action on Sunday, travelling to Inverness to take on Highland RFC.
Highland finished strongly to win 31-12. Daniel Gordon and Matthew Tomalin scored for the youngsters with Dan Corr adding one conversion.
They now face either Ellon or Mackie in the Plate competition.
The U-18s travelled to Gordonstoun and enjoyed a good opening period, restricting their hosts to one score. However, things clicked for Gordonstoun in the second half and the Ross team couldn’t contain their attacking play. The Ross score at the end was scant consolation in a comfortable 50-7 win for Gordonstoun. The youngsters now face Ellon or Aberdeen Wanderers in the Plate competition.
The U-16s get their cup campaign started this coming Sunday when they travel to face Aberdeen Grammar.
