Ross County striker Billy Mckay believes the fire-power the club possesses can see them shoot up the Premiership league table.

It was well documented last season that the Staggies had the worst defence in the top flight, letting in 60 goals in their 30 matches.

Steps have been taken to fix the backline over the summer, but Mckay believes it is the threat that County have at the other end of the pitch that can see them improve on a 10th-place finish.

The Northern Ireland international, along with Ross Stewart, had scored seven in the league and 11 in all competitions before the curtain was brought down on the campaign early, and they still had eight games against bottom-six opposition left to play.

With those two also competing with Lee Erwin and Oli Shaw for starting spots, there is reason to believe the goals can flow in Dingwall next season.

“We have four strikers that are fighting for one or two positions and three or four players fighting for the two wide areas,” Mckay reasoned.

“So we know there is going to be plenty of competition.

“If you are not on it the other person is going to step on. It is good to have that arsenal and it is up to us to build on that and to improve the team.

“I am sure the manager will be pushing us as well and we will be doing the same as players.

“We have a chance of a good start to do well. We have a few home games in there and at home we will be looking to pick up as many points as we can.

“A plus point last season was our home form and we want to build and pick up more on the road and if we do that we know we will get up the league.”

While much of the rebuilding focus in Dingwall has been in defence, Regan Charles-Cook is a welcome addition to the attack.

The ex-Gillingham man scored a screamer in the friendly at Aberdeen.

Mckay got County’s other goal in a 2–2 draw last Saturday, and the 31-year-old says he is looking forward to linking up with Charles-Cook again in the future.

“We have recruited really well,” Mckay said.

“A few boys have come up from England and embraced it, and they seem really good. We saw that against Aberdeen when Regan popped up for a goal and hopefully he can continue that.

“I am not the sort of player who will beat loads of players and score.

“I thrive on players getting the ball to me, and Regan is one along with the midfielders and wide players that will look to do that.

“He has been a real bright spot, is a nice guy and is willing to learn and he has looked good so far. Hopefully, he can impress this season along with the other guys and we can create lots of chances and score lots of goals.”

Mckay hit form before last season ended, and he hopes to carry that over, adding: “I was looking to add to my goal tally, hopefully I can save them for this season.”
