Ross County chief executive officer Steven Ferguson has pleaded for time while the club tries to get to the bottom of allegedly homophobic comments made by Michael Gardyne.

The Staggies legend was involved in a flash point at the end of the first half after Iain Vigurs fouled Alfredo Morelos.

Gardyne was then booked for what manager Stuart Kettlewell later said referee John Beaton called "foul and abusive language", but Rangers players in the vicinity – most of all defender Connor Goldson – were incensed.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard said after the match that what his players told him was said has no place on a football pitch, while reports surfaced last night that the Scottish FA had opened an investigation into the matter – although there is no mention of it on their disciplinary page at the time of writing.

Ferguson was unable to confirm or deny whether any such probe was taking place, but did say the Dingwall outfit were looking into the matter themselves and asked for patience to let the truth come out.

"There's nothing clear, that's why I'm asking for time to get to the bottom of it," Ferguson explained.

"We don't want to say anything that's wrong and jeopardises anyone, so until we get concrete evidence we can't make any sort of judgement.

"We are aware of what is being said about the game on Sunday, we have woken up to it in the papers today.

"As a football club we are aware of the situation, and we are conducting our own investigation to get to the bottom of what was allegedly said.

"It's less than 48 hours after the alleged incident, so we need time to do this properly, and I hope everyone appreciates that.

"When we do get to the bottom of it, we will let everyone know what the outcome."
