Ross Sutherland Rugby Club suffered extra time heartbreak after losing 20–15 to an exiles and students select at the Naval Grounds in Invergordon on Tuesday.

The match was tied at 15–15 at full time as the match went into a sudden death next score wins – and it was the exiles/students select that managed to find victory.

The match was the highlight of the Christmas Cracker event which was a festival of rugby at the home ground.

The event kicked off with a minis and micros session of rugby, followed by a youth rugby session before the big match in the afternoon.

An online auction also took place which was followed by a quiz at the clubhouse.

Club spokesman Dave Gill says it was an excellent event which survived the winter weather.

“It was wintery conditions but we still managed to have a rugby bonanza,” he said.

“The mini and micros kicked things off before the under-16’s took to the field.

“The Ross Sutherland and Exiles/Students game kicked off with blizzard conditions.

“But it was good to get people at the clubhouse which was full. It created a nice atmosphere at the place.

“It was great to see a few students back home for Christmas.

“Some of the students played for Ross Sutherland at the start of the season but had to move away for university, so they played in the other team.”

Speaking about the match, Gill said: “It was three tries each during normal time, there was no conversions and we did try using snow tees at one point.

“We played next score wins after full time, so it was four tries to three for the exiles and students.

“It was a great chance to give everyone a bit of a game at this time of year, even though it wasn’t a strict game.”
