CHAMPIONS Week ended at Tain Golf Club last Saturday afternoon after frantic efforts from the greens staff to get the course back in order after morning flooding.

The two leading men’s qualifiers from the previous weekend’s qualifying rounds met in the final, each chasing a second championship title.

Billy Ferries was hoping to end a 17-year wait following his only success in 1998 while a much younger Alan Everett was bidding to add to his 2010 success.

After putting out defending champion Lyle McAlpine in the semi-finals it was Ferries who went into the final as favourite, but Everett won the championship by 2&1.

The men’s handicap championship was won by teenager Daryn Jack (18).

In the women’s scratch championship, Claire Ross added to her 2012 and 2014 titles by winning with a two-hole margin.

The handicaps of the finalists in the women’s handicap final were both 22 and the scratch tie was ended after 16 holes when Deirdre Wlodarczyk beat Angela Ross 4&2.

The junior scratch champion is Scott MacDougall (15) who beat his older brother Callum in the final, while the other trophy went to Sean Kennedy after a win over Connor Keay in the handicap final.

The club would like to thank sponsors The Mortgage Shop and Ewan Forrest for supporting the tournament they hosted on Sunday. There was a huge field of 140 players.

The format for the day was an Open Pairs Texas Scramble and the winners were:

Scratch — 1 65 B Campbell, Tain and S Buchan, Invergordon.

Handicap — 1 A Sangster and G Oliver, Tain 63; 2 S Sutherland, Tain and J Sutherland, Bonar Bridge

Tain Golf Club lottery numbers on July 5 were 2, 9, 18 and 20 and as there was no winner, next week’s jackpot is £1,000.
