Ross County have announced that Dutch defender Kenny van der Weg has left the club.

The 28-year-old asked to leave to move back to Holland in order to be closer to his family.

Van der Weg rejoined the Staggies for a second spell in January 2019, helping the club to an Irn-Bru Cup and Scottish Championship double.

He had picked up an injury at the tail end of last season that kept him out of the Betfred Cup group stage last month, but he did appear in a pre-season friendly against Carlisle United.

The defender – who could operate at left-back or centre-back – originally signed for County in the summer of 2016, spending 18 months in Dingwall before leaving for Hamilton Academical.

But a quick return was on the cards, and just one year later – via Roeselare in Belgium – he was back at the Global Energy Stadium.

Over his two spells at the club van der Weg made 76 appearances in all competitions.

Co-manager Steven Ferguson told the Ross County website: "Kenny has been a great professional to the club in both of his spells here and we totally understand his reasoning for wishing to return home.

"I am sure along with myself, Stuart and his teammates, our gans will wish Kenny all the very best for the future and we look forward to seeing the next developments in his career."
