Dingwall teenager and Ross County Athletics Club athlete Caitlyn Heggie called up for Scotland squad to compete in London

ROSS County Athletics Club athlete Caitlyn Heggie has been called up to the Scotland squad to compete at the 2022 TCS London Mini Marathon races.

The Dingwall Academy pupil will represent her country in London on Saturday, October 1 in the under-17 girls race.

She is among 24 athletes who have been selected in the Scotland squad who will compete in the 2.6km course.

Heggie is the only athlete from the Highlands who has been selected for the national squad which is represented by 13 clubs from across the country.

Heggie is one of six athletes who is will compete in the under-17 girls race for Scotland along with Esme Dougall (Giffnock North AC); Jessica Inglis (Law and District AAC); Millie McClelland-Brooks (Glasgow School of Sport); Amy Teasdale (Kilbarchan AAC) and Maja Thomson (Team East Lothian).

Scotland have also selected squads for the under-17 boys race as well as for both boys and girls races at under-15 level.

Heggie is the top athlete for her age group in the Highlands as she achieved a number of significant results this year.

In March, she claimed victory in the five kilometre race in the Inverness Half Marathon.

In June, she was crowned Scottish Schools 3000 metres champion when she claimed gold in a time of 10 minutes 34.20 seconds.

Heggie has also won silver at the Scottish Under-17 3000 Metres Championship and bronze at the Scottish Cross Country Championship.

She made her international debut in March when she represented Scotland at the Schools International Athletics Board (SIAB) Cross Country International in Wales.

She also recently competed at the UK School Games when she recorded a personal best in the 3000 metres.

She knocked 17 seconds off her personal best recording a time of nine minutes and 59 seconds to finish in fourth place.

Heggie first made headlines last October when she won the River Ness 5k at the Loch Ness Marathon Festival of Running in Inverness.

The event this year will take place on Sunday, October 2, 24 hours after the London Marathon Mini Races will be taking place.

It is not yet known if Heggie will defend her River Ness 5k title in Inverness in three weeks time due to competing for Scotland in London.
