A depleted Athletic side were no match for the defending champions who ran riot in a one-sided affair.

Golspie were 4–0 up at the break and the Sutherland side showed no mercy after the break scoring another six goals without reply.

Athletic were dealt a blow in the build up to the match when their four on-loan signings from Nairn County. Ryan MacDonald, Jack MacLean, Seamus McConaghy and Craig Munro, were recalled by their parent club.

Added to that a number of injuries and late call-offs left manager Jason Golabek with a patched-up squad.

“We had a depleted squad and a number of boys were playing out of position,” Golabek explained.

“Golspie were just superior all over the park, we just couldn’t cope with them.

“The boys were run off their feet trying to play through injuries, and it was a bad day all round.

“Hopefully it was a one-off and we can bounce back for our cup match at Thurso.”

Eoghann Davie gave Golspie an early lead when he pounced on a slip up in the makeshift Athletic defence.

Goals from Sandy Sutherland and Danny Coghill stretched Golspie’s lead around the half- hour mark and Davie added a fourth goal a couple of minutes from the break.

There was no let up for the beleaguered Athletic defence in the second half and further goals from Sean Munro and Eddie MacGregor put Golspie 6–0 up with 20 minutes to play.

Davie then completed his hat trick from the penalty spot and Liam Bremner struck with a late treble to round off the scoring.

Leaders, Invergordon came from behind to beat Thurso 4–1 at the Recreation Grounds to move six points clear at the top of the table.

The Bunillidh Thistle v St Duthus fixture was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

In the North Caledonian Cup, Orkney battled to a 5–3 win over Nairn County under-20s in Kirkwall, while Halkirk United eased to a 6–1 win against Bonar Bridge at Morrison Park.
