Billy Mckay wants to see Ross County go on a cup run to help boost their league form – just like they did last season.
On their way to lifting the Championship title and securing an immediate return to the top flight, the Staggies made it all the way to the final of the Challenge Cup.
There they beat Connah’s Quay Nomads 3–1 in the final at Inverness’s Caledonian Stadium to lift their first trophy of the campaign.
Although it meant County were often playing games while other clubs had free weekends, stringing together wins helped them build momentum throughout the season.
With the prospect of Ayr United in the Scottish Cup fourth round coming up on Saturday, 31-year-old McKay is looking to repeat that knockout boost this time around.
“Sometimes it is a welcome break from the league,” he explained.
“It’s a one-off game, and sometimes they are special.
“We will go into it trying to get the win to get into the next round. If we can get a good performance, we can try to take that into the league.
“Last year we had a good run in the Irn-Bru Cup and managed to win it. It’s about keeping that winning mentality. You don’t want to lose games like this and carry that into the league.
“It can definitely help our league form and keep the momentum going.
“So we want to start this year off with a win and keep that going.”
